by Genevieve Cogman
Cogman’s books are often thrown into the same ring as Diana Wynne Jones and Neil Gaiman (not a boxing ring, but a Venn Diagram ring, of course). This science-fictiony, fantasy-ish, Steam Punk thriller is a prime example as to why. It’s a story about an interdimensional library and the librarians who work there. These aren’t spectacled, cardigan-wearing shushing librarians that you’re familiar with. These librarians are spies sent on missions to collect books for safekeeping. In this first book in the series, we meet Irene and her partner Kai, sent to a super-natural London to retrieve a very dangerous book that someone else has already stolen. Oh, and they meet Sherlock Holmes while there.
